After Cara Delevingne‘s admirably candid interview with Vogue, in which she revealed her battles with depression and self harm, we aren’t surprised that many were moved by Cara‘s brave openness.

Since the interview there have been countless tweets of support and praise for Cara, including celeb pal Cheryl Fernandez-Versini.

During the interview Cara, now 22, shared that she first fell into serious depression aged 15: ‘All of a sudden I was hit with a massive wave of depression and anxiety and self-hatred, where the feelings were so painful that I would slam my head against a tree to try to knock myself out. I never cut, but I’d scratch myself to the point of bleeding. I just wanted to dematerialize and have someone sweep me away.’

Even more admirably, Cara was then very open about the relationship between herself and mother Pandora who has battled with a heroin addiction. ‘You grow up too quickly because you’re parenting your parents,’ Cara said. This is still one battle Cara continues to fight, ‘I know there are people who have stopped and are fine now, but not in my circumstance. She’s still struggling’.

Importantly she discussed the suicidal feelings she has previously felt. Cara explained that after her decision to take a break from modelling she ‘was packing my bags, and suddenly I just wanted to end it. I had a way, and it was right there in front of me. And I was like, I need to decide whether I love myself as much as I love the idea of death’.

Cara’s honesty about her battles with mental health has not only raised incredibly important awareness and support for those who may be similarly struggling,  but also of admiration amongst many for the model. Cheryl has tweeted these messages-

Cheryl herself has previously opened up about her own struggles in her autobiography Cheryl: My Story, in which she described what she felt was a nervous breakdown during her divorce from Ashley Cole. The 31-year-old wrot,  ‘ Really I wanted to say “Help me, I can’t live like this any more. I’m miserable as hell.”‘

As hard as it might be, getting help and openly discussing any issues is so important. People in the public eye, such as Cara and Cheryl, sharing their stories not only helps others but is also a very important reminder that celebrities are only human too. Hats off to these inspiring ladies!
