Elton John treated in intensive care after suffering ‘rare and potentially deadly’ bacterial infection

The singer was forced to cancel concerts on his tour due to his illness

Elton John has been treated in intensive care after getting a ‘potentially deadly’ bacterial infection whilst on tour.

The 70-year-old star become unwell at the end of his run of shows in South America last week and was ‘violently ill’ on his flight back to the UK.

He was admitted to hospital for urgent treatment as soon as he arrived and spent two nights being supported by specialist equipment.

After an extended stay Elton was discharged on 22 April and has since been recuperating at home, but has been forced to cancel his upcoming concerts in April and May.

It’s clear that the singer has been through a scary experience, with his spokesperson explaining in a statement: ‘Infections of this nature are rare and potentially deadly.

‘Thankfully, Elton’s medical team identified this quickly and treated it successfully. He is expected to make a full and complete recovery.’

Elton has also thanked the medical staff who cared for him for their support and sends his apologies to fans over his cancelled performances.

‘I am so fortunate to have the most incredible and loyal fans and apologise for disappointing them,’ the award-winning star says.

‘I am extremely grateful to the medical team for their excellence in looking after me so well.’

Elton is due to return to the stage on 3 June at a gig in Twickenham, southwest London.

Fans of the star have been sending him their best wishes following news of his illness.

‘All the best and all the love and light for you on your recovery. #GetWellSoon, my friend,’ one admirer wrote on Twitter.

Another posted: ‘Please take care and gets lots of rest. Enjoy your family while you heal. Love one of your many fans.’

Elton is married to David Furnish and the couple are parents to sons Zachary, 6, and Elijah, 4.
