Peaches Geldof’s widower Thomas Cohen has opened up for the first time about the tragic moment he discovered her body after she died of a heroin overdose in April 2014.

The 26-year-old found his wife at their Kent home, where their then 11-month-old son Phaedra had been alone with her for eight hours before Thomas returned with their elder son Astala after staying at his parents’ house.

Despite the heartbreak of it all, Thomas admits that he wasn’t totally shocked by what happened and found himself having to focus on their children shortly after his wife’s death.

‘When I found her, I was not surprised,’ the singer explains. ‘I thought to myself at the moment: “Yes of course – you had to do that.’”

‘What I can remember, it must have been an hour after I’ve found it, that it’s time for the kids’ lunch.

‘They needed their lunch. So I took the children’s chairs to the table, took the yogurts out of the fridge, the bananas … After that we drove here. Escorted by the police.’

Thomas – who had been married to Peaches since 2012 – admits that having to take care of Astala and Phaedra helped him to cope with his grief, though it’s difficult to accept how little time they had with Peaches.

‘The routine I had to keep up with the children helped me a lot,’ Thomas tells German newspaper Bild. ‘They have lived longer than they knew their mother.

‘They were just one and two years. Now they are four and five.’

Peaches had been a heroin addict and had been taking the substitute drug methadone for two and a half years before she lost her life at the age of 25, Thomas revealed during an inquest into the star’s death in July 2014.

And he admits that knowing this was the cause of her death proved difficult to deal with in the months that followed.

‘Heroin is a drug where you’re trying to enforce something on you that’s greater than life. You can only really… it’s horrible you’re filling your body with something,’ he explains.

‘It was incredible traumatising, after it happened… a few months after. Because it was so deeply traumatising you know that moment.’

Now the S.C.U.M frontman has managed to find happiness again, having started dating Zoe Sidel after splitting from Daisy Lowe last year, and says that his sons are doing well.

‘I want them to be happy, I don’t care what they end up doing,’ Thomas reveals. ‘They are miraculously having happy childhoods which hopefully leads to happy fruitful lives.’

Next week will mark the third anniversary of Peaches’ tragic death.
