Just as we were starting to process the whole Zayn Malik and Perrie Edwards split, we discovered that the former 1D star reportedly broke up with the Little Mixer by TEXT – and our whole world came crashing down once more.
Why Zayn, WHY??
Still, he wouldn’t be the first celebrity to opt for a pretty brutal method of dumping – as these splits show…
1. Russell Brand and Katy Perry
Zayn isn’t the first celeb to turn to his trusty smartphone when it comes to ditching his girl – Katy Perry revealed in 55013 that Russell Brand had announced his plans to divorce her via text message.
In an interview with Vogue, the singer disclosed: “Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011.”
Ouch.
2. Joe Jonas and Taylor Swift
We don’t know what would be worst – being dumped by phone via text or being dumped by phone via a CALL.
Taylor Swift and K-Pez could probably weigh up the pros and cons of each (were they talking, of course) after Joe Jonas ditched Tay Tay with a phone call lasting just 27 seconds when they dated back in 2008.
Talking to chat show host Elle DeGeneres, Taylor revealed: ‘You know what, when I find that person that is right for me, I’m not even going to remember the boy that broke up with me over the phone in 27 seconds when I was 18.’
3. Matt Damon and Minne Driver
Matt Damon dumping his then-girlfriend Minnie Driver by denying he had a girlfriend on Oprah is the daddy of celebrity break-up stories.
After the show broadcast, Minnie told the Los Angeles Times: ‘It’s unfortunate that Matt went on Oprah. It seemed like a good forum for him to announce to the world that we were no longer together, which I found fantastically inappropriate.’

4. Sylvain Longchambon and Jennifer Metcalfe
On the plus side, after falling for Coronation Street star Samia Ghadie, at least professional ice dancer Sylvain Longchambon had the decency to break-up with his former Dancing on Ice partner Jennifer Metcalfe with a thoughtful phone call.
But – somewhat cruelly – he chose to make that phone call on Christmas Day 2012, thus ruining the most wonderful time of the year for Jennifer.
At the time, Jennifer told The Sun: ‘In the early hours of Christmas morning he told me on the phone that Samia and himself had had a conversation about their feelings for each other.
‘He didn’t go into detail. He said he fancied Samia but in the next breath he said he loved and adored me – so try and get your head around that one. It felt like the worst Christmas morning ever.’
5. Jack Tweed and Chanelle Hayes
Why break-up face to face when you can do it in 140 characters?
Former Big Brother contestant Chanelle and Jade Goody’s late husband Jack had a pretty rollercoaster relationship, breaking up and getting back together several times.
But Chanelle finally called it quits with Jack on TWITTER after he sent her a picture from a night out showing him hugging a blonde beauty and flicking the finger at the camera.
In a string of tweets, Chanelle posted: ‘Some people in this world make me sick. To think I shared my life with one of those people for nearly 3 years turns my stomach! #scumbag
‘And before that I’d wasted another 2 years with an equally scummy #scumbag 5 years of my life just gone. #stomachturning ON and UP!!!!!!!!!’
6. Phil Collins and Jill Tavelman
Waaaay back in the olden days (also known as the Eighties) before mobile phones and Twitter were invented, celebrities still turned to technology to help them do their dumping.
And, when rocker Phil Collins decided to tell his then-wife Jill Tavelman that he wanted a divorce in 1989, he reportedly did so via FAX MACHINE.
Jill went on to be awarded £17 million in the split, so we guess she wasn’t too devastated.
