Hashtags weren't a 'thing' when T4 show Popworld first launched fifteen years ago - but if they had been, you can guarantee these interviews would have got #awkward trending

Popworld's Simon Amstell and Miquita Oliver

Oh, how we miss the glory years of weekend morning telly – and in particular Popworld, which celebrates the 15th anniversary of its first ever episode this year.

Sure, Live & Kicking had the oh-so-dreamy Jamie Theakston, and Ant & Dec made SM:TV a lol-a-minute, but Popworld – led by its witty, sarcastic and downright ridiculous (in a good way) hosts Simon Amstell (now a stand-up comedian) and Miquita Oliver (that’s her voice on the Argos ads, FYI) – was the show that held the most special place in our hearts.

And so, in honour of the once glorious jewel in the now-defunt T4’s crown, we bring you six of the most brilliantly awkward interviews in the show’s history. Prepare to squirm in your seat!

The Killers

When you think of The Killers, you no doubt think of frontman Brandon Flowers. But, for reasons unexplained, Brandon was unavailable for the band’s 2004 Popworld interview, and instead two other members – Dave and Ronnie apparently (?) – were sent along to be grilled by Simon. But all he could do is lament how much better things would have been had Brandon been there. Which Dave and Ronnie didn’t seem too impressed at…

The Kooks

We don’t reckon that Kooks frontman Luke Pritchard has Simon on his phone’s ‘favourites’ list after this intensely awkward interview in which the host asked the singer about his ex-girlfriend Katie Melua, his inability to ‘perform, romantically speaking’ and the band’s stage school past.

Duran Duran

Simon assumed the role of iconic 80s band Duran Duran’s PR man, intent on the band pulling off an incredible comeback, for this hilarious interview in which he suggests they ‘lose the wives’ and put their children ‘in a cupboard for a week’. Unfortunately, Simon Le Bon and the boys didn’t quite seem to get what was going on – and really didn’t fancy a sing-a-long of The Bangles’ Walk Like An Egyptian.

Gwen Stefani

The fact that the singer’s group of Harajuku girls – who sat motionless throughout – only heightened the levels of awkwardness in this 2004 interview, which saw Simon insisting that Gwen let him tickle her during regular feature The Big Ones.

Arctic Monkeys

We think it’s safe to say that lead singer Alex Turner would rather have been anywhere else than in the room for this cringey interview. He certainly wasn’t as excited as Simon to be there, who opened the interview with: ‘It’s the Arctic Monkeys – hurray!’

Avril Lavigne

Simon and Miquita quit Popworld in 2006, handing the awkward interview baton to new hosts Alex Zane and Alexa Chung, which produced this truly AWFUL interview between Alex and Canadian popstrel Avril Lavigne, including one question where the messy-haired host asks if being proposed to in Venice by her then-husband, Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley, was ruined by the city apparently ‘smelling of eggs’ 😂 😂
