Sam Smith wants to be a 'spokeperson' for the gay community

Sam Smith

Sam Smith has opened up about how proud he is of his sexuality, revealing he wants to be a ‘spokesperson’ for the gay community. Speaking to NME, the Writing’s on the Wall singer said: ‘I want to be a figure in the gay community, who speaks for gay men.’

He added that there is a more serious goal behind his music: ‘I sell records in countries ‘where gay men get killed and that’s a big thing for me, because maybe one person in that country will pick up my album, realise it’s by a gay artist, and it might change their opinion.’ We have every faith in you, Sam.

The star tweeted just over a week ago on ‘National Coming Out Day’ in support of ‘brave hearts’ in the gay community who might be admitting their sexuality for the first time.

Addressing comments taken out of context last year, where he said he did not want to be a gay spokesperson, Sam explains: ‘What I was trying to say was that I didn’t want the album to appeal to just one community, I wanted it to appeal to all of them.’ Makes a lot of sense, actually.

The interview took a more light-hearted turn when Sam spoke about which James Bond he’d like to be – a matter he has apparently given a lot of thought! He said: ‘[Daniel Craig] was my favourite initially, because I’m 23 years old. I hadn’t seen all the old movies, and I loved how modern his take on Bond was. But when I went back and watched them all, I realised that it’s Connery and Moore who I love the most. I love how classy and clean-cut they are. I think I’d like the next Bond to be more of a return to that.’
